A private sector perspective on private standards

Some approaches that could help to reduce current and potential future conflicts between public and private standards

This paper, written by our Board Member Mike Robach in 2010, addresses concerns raised by OIE Members about the increasing importance of private standards to the international trade in animal products and the potential for conflict between official standards and those established by private standard setting organizations.

The paper suggests that collective efforts are needed on the part of food system stakeholders, governments and intergovernmental organizations to ensure food safety, animal health, animal welfare and plant health as these aspects of food production are critical to consumer confidence, affordability and food security.

In addition that respectful dialogue amongst the public, private and academic stakeholders is necessary for continuous improvement within the global collection of food systems that serve to nourish the public.

The number of food safety issues occurring in agricultural production at the farm level is on the rise. These issues include such problems as cross-contamination (allergens and other contaminants) due to bad growing and harvesting practices, undeclared ingredients, illegal dyes, incorrect pesticide use, improper use of chemicals, and others.

Member Interviews

SSAFE has been working diligently over the past 20 years to strengthen the safe supply and trade of food around the world. Our Board Members are key to that success so in October 2022 we asked our members (recognized leaders from across the food sector) why they love their job, why their work is so important, and why they support SSAFE.
